ART AND CULTURE IN QUERETARO
Live the Creative Metropolis from the center of your heart!
A Museum is a place where you can think differently,' said Papus von Saenger, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Queretaro. Gradually, the city has become an artistic and cultural center of Mexico, four different directors of museums and galleries confirm it.
Below, we present a route of spaces dedicated to art in Queretaro, museums that coincide in being a cultural bastion, but at the same time are different in offering and audience. Dare to meet them:
Liberty Gallery
Since the eighties, Queretaro's artistic offering has been centered on the city's first painting. The Libertad Gallery was one of the first spaces to promote the proposal of local artists.
“Queretaro has a thriving artistic community, our work would not be complete without the artistic community,” says Paulina Macias, director of the Libertad Gallery.
In its three rooms, this Gallery has the task of questioning the different social frameworks through artistic expression, a natural impulse of the human being, says Paulina Macías. Today you can enjoy a tribute to Julio Castillo and Gerardo Esquivel, two artists from Queretaro who marked an era and a style at the end of the last century.
Museum of Contemporary Art of Queretaro
Continuing along this route of Museums and the search for spaces for cultural expression we arrive at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Next to the iconic Temple of La Cruz stands this Museum, in the neighborhood that witnessed the founding of Queretaro.
With barely three years of existence, it has the clear objective of serving as a condenser of cultural proposals from Queretaro and the world. It is a two-way road, local expressions so that they are known to the world and global so that they are appreciated in Queretaro.
“We want to explain contemporary art. We seek to create audiences, to get people closer, we want the public to see it, we do that with an exhibition program and an educational program,” commented Papus von Saenger, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Querétaro.
The public attending MACQ must understand that it is a safe place to think. It is a space that its management offers as free thought, the artistic offer exists and will exist, but the thought of society must be free.
Queretaro Art Museum
To understand the history and significance of local art, it is necessary to visit some of the spaces that keep the ancient testimony of these currents. The route takes us to the Queretaro Art Museum.
The cloister of San Agustín houses one of the most relevant baroque jewels of New Spain, the Baroque Patio is, without a doubt, one of the essential architectural works to understand the Colony in Latin America.
'Art is something basic for any society, at an educational level it opens channels in the brain, it creates synapses that do not generate any other expression. When beauty enters the eyes and inspires, it is something special, nothing does it like art,' said Antonio Arelle, director of the Queretaro Art Museum.
City Museum
There is no better place to conclude this route than the City Museum. Located in the former convent of Capuchinas, a space has been assembled for the free expression of ideas and art exhibition.
This place has transcended as a showcase so that, through art, it spreads ideas and trends of thought of the current Queretaro society. On the two floors of the colonial complex there are spaces for a variety of exhibitions, as well as educational workshops and common areas that are used by artists and society in general.
