Colon has many things to offer such as traditional ice cream, classic bakery, beautiful plazas, a center with history and more. Embark on an unmissable route in our state.
The Municipality of Colón is part of three Routes of Querétaro: the Cheese and Wine Route, the Otomí-Chichimeca Route with the oratory chapels and the Route of Las Haciendas. In addition, the Cerro del Zamorano was declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
However, among its streets there are also traditional sites, with history and flavor. How about starting your tour in its imposing basilica.
The Basilica of the Virgin of Sorrows in Soriano – built between 1880 and 1912 by the priest Román de la Vega – has Neoclassical architectural characteristics; in this place the Blessed Virgin is venerated in her invocation of Los Dolores. It is a polychrome wooden sculpture, 65 centimeters high, possibly from the seventeenth century.
History indicates that its construction is due to the great influx of pilgrimages to the temple of Santo Domingo to venerate the image of the Virgin of Sorrows, this was transferred in 1703 from Zimapán Cadereyta and later to Santo Domingo in 1705, where it remained for almost two centuries until its new temple was built: the Sanctuary of Soriano, dated February 7, 2009, was declared a Minor Basilica. Its festivities are Good Friday and September 15.
Continue with a must-stop at El Güero Bakery
The El Güero Bakery has been making bread for sale for 30 years; however, a lifetime with a family recipe that follows a tradition of great flavor.
Visit it in Calle del Moral without a number, be sure to try its empanada stuffed with piloncillo.
Since 1946
Since 1946, Nieves Puebla -located at Álvaro Obregón 25a- has been a trip to the past for its facilities that look like an antique museum, and it is that pieces, collections and antiques adorn a place that, in addition, sells the best ice cream you will taste in Querétaro.
Its specialty: mantecado, which competes with any classic mantecado in the capital, as well as garambullo snow.
Finally, we recommend that you relive the history of Columbus in the Community Museum, located next to the Basilica, it is a site that keeps the historical background of Columbus, agricultural activities, the history of the Cristero Movement and the participation of the municipality in each of the historical moments of Mexico.
So, let's recap. The tour that we recommend, so that you can enjoy Colón to the fullest, begins with an obligatory stop at its Basilica of the Virgin of Sorrows in Soriano and then delight your palate with an artisan bread from El Güero, go to refresh yourself with a mantecado ice cream from the Nevería Puebla and end at the Community Museum so that you can learn a little about the history of this charming municipality.
