The nice axolotls that appear on the new fifty-peso bill have had a lot of boom; However, have you been able to appreciate one in real life?
On the river that runs towards the El Cedral waterfall they are almost entrenched, they swim as if smiling and spike their small fins in the camouflage of the cold waters of Pinal de Amoles: they are the axolotls, endemic to the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro: Ambystoma Velasci.
They had a celebration and a tribute to their species at the First Festival of Axolotl Conservation of the Sierra Gorda de Querétaro, which was held from April 28 to 30.
Axolotl is a term that comes from the Nahuatl word axolotl which means "water monster" and is an amphibian endemic to Mexico.
Since then, the small amphibians can be seen in the Axolotario installed on the second floor of the Pinal de Amoles General Tomás Mejía Community Museum. The Ambystoma Velasci can also be seen on the El Cedral trail, a natural landscape of the biosphere that is part of the protected reserve for its conservation.
People who visit the place should be aware that entering the waters of El Cedral to swim is prohibited so as not to alter the biological conditions that the species needs for its habitat and reproduction.
With the exhibition and dissemination of axolotls, it seeks to raise awareness, reflect and disseminate everything that is known about the emblematic species that lives in Pinal de Amoles, so that future generations preserve its conservation and generate empathy of respect and care for animals.
Based on data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature's red list, the Mexican axolotl is in critical danger of extinction due to habitat loss, the introduction of invasive species into its habitat (such as humans), overexploitation, pollution and its consumption as food.
Visit the Axolotario at the Tomás Mejía Museum and also take the tour in El Cedral to learn about the life, characteristics and history of this endemic amphibian, where you will also learn about the care and actions to be taken on the way to its conservation.
