As public policies and programs must continue to help create regenerative tourism with minimal environmental impact, greater local community participation, the value of cultural knowledge, and engagement with broader audiences, the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of the State of Querétaro is leading the development of regional tourism that conserves the territory and its natural wealth through regenerative practices. through the integration of all local actors and institutions within the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. Local owners are involved through the development of their capacity to participate in a conservation economy that values scenic beauty, a new culture of service delivery that will allow their product to access new market niches.

"Protected areas need tourism, and tourism needs protected areas. Although the relationship is complex and sometimes adversarial, tourism is always a critical component to consider in the establishment and management of protected areas." - International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Today, about one-tenth of the world's land surface is protected in some form. Bordering the states of Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí and Hidalgo, Querétaro's Sierra Gorda is a shining gem in the heart of Mexico. With an area of 384 thousand hectares, the Biosphere Reserve occupies 33% of the State of Querétaro and its strategic biogeographic position between the Neotropical Arctic and Mesoamerican mountain regions makes the Sierra Gorda one of the places of greatest richness and ecological diversity in Mexico.

Protected natural areas are an essential resource for the conservation of biodiversity, which is why the Sierra Gorda Alliance was formed as a model of entrepreneurship and social participation in the Sierra Gorda.

Their role is crucial in developing skills and economic value for landowners whose forests provide environmental services, scenic beauty, and carbon and water sequestration. Together with various stakeholders, they work to promote the destination as a living laboratory that showcases cultural and environmental practices.

"Becoming an EarthCheck certified destination will add value to the way we market Sierra Gorda as a sustainable destination," said Martha Isabel "Pati" Ruiz Corzo, Managing Director of Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda I.A.P. (GESG). "Working with EarthCheck will help us monitor and improve sustainability and promote our achievements, as well as share our learnings with other leading destinations around the world."

Tourism offers an opportunity to explain the park's values, help tell the story of conservation, support the local community, and contribute directly to human well-being through the active leisure and cultural experiences offered in the Biosphere Reserve
