The days have come to remember those who are no longer here, to celebrate their lives and commemorate their transcendence. The days of orange, candles, the smell of incense and the taste of bread of the dead arrived. The days have come to exalt Mexican tradition and to show Querétaro and its Day of the Dead Festival Mictlán 2022.

This festival consists of several ornamentations located in the main walkways of the Historic Center, the installation of a monumental altar in Plaza de Armas, a simultaneous cultural and tourist representation in Madrid, Spain and multiple presentations of the Aztlán Company. This Day of the Dead holiday will take place from October 27 to November 6.

Inspiration: the road to MICTLÁN

What is behind the elaboration of this altar and the surrounding activations? You will be able to find a little of the pre-Hispanic worldview of our ancestors. An installation that, with motifs of the Otomí-Chichimeca tradition of the Tolimán region – which has also been considered Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2008 – explains what happened to the soul when someone died.

The road to Mictlán was a journey through nine regions or levels that aimed to purify the soul and achieve eternal rest. After traversing roads full of jaguars, fighting battles, overcoming obstacles and swimming through deep waters, the soul could break free and unite with a whole.

This offering means a rescue of historical content for the enjoyment of tourists and locals who accompany us in the city these days and proudly shows an indigenous past that transmitted from generation to generation teaches us the purest way to remember our loved ones.

Our Day of the Dead festivity is a cultural icon of Mexico that adorns the city of Querétaro for a few days and that makes us feel proud as Mexicans and Querétaros of our roots, our past and our communion with transcendence. A time when our ancestors keep us company and when we can honor and dignify our traditions, origin and roots.

This altar is a 360-degree structure, more than 5 meters high and many significant elements that are there for the visitor's reflection and visual enjoyment. Among clay pots, mats, grains, fruit, candles, corn husks and flowers, this large installation makes us question: What is life without death?

We invite you to enjoy with your family everything that the city has prepared for you. Remember that this Day of the Dead Festival will take place from October 27 to November 6.

Take a walk through the Historic Center, walk through its walkways, look in its squares and you will surely find the way to Mictlán.
