Immerse yourself in one of the most important religious tours in the country, the Cristero Route in Colón is a destination helped by parishioners from all over the country. This is his story.

With fifteen commemorative plaques throughout its Historic Center, the municipality of Colón offers an unmissable guide for people interested in religious tourism. A tour that begins with the houses of the Cristero fighters.

On February 4, 1928, many Querétaros of the capital and inhabitants of Colón, in pursuit of Don Manuel Frías, rose up in arms against the Callista government in defense of religious freedom; it is then that characters such as Norberto García, Agripina Montes, J. Jesús Hernández Nieves, the brothers J. Jesús and Salvador Morales emerge; among so many Colon residents who actively participated in the Cristero Movement.

The route includes:

The House of J. Jesús Hernández Nieves "the martyr of ocotillos", musician, intellectual in the Cristero Movement, killed in combat, his remains rest in the Sacristy of the Parish of San Francisco.

The House of Roses. It was inhabited by the Mothers of the Order of Santa Rosa de Viterbo from 1886 to 1928, when they were expelled and persecuted during the Cristero Movement, taking refuge with the religious families of the town.

The House of Don Clemente Ugalde, alderman in 1923, photographer by profession, persecuted during the Cristero Movement, in this place the image of the Virgin of Sorrows of Soriano was kept between one of the walls of his room. The House of José Inés Sotero Nieves Aguilar, teacher, farmer and sacristan, shot during the Cristero Movement outside the Basilica of Soriano on April 11, 1928: the holes left by the bullets can still be seen.

In the same way, the route continues through the Union Garden. The original fountain was built in 1877, in this place was the bust sculpture of Christopher Columbus, until the year 1930. In 1923, Governor José M. Truchuelo was received, on the occasion of the declaration of Colón as a Free Municipality.

Likewise, the tour continues through the House donated by Doña Paula Gómez de la Cortina, former Hospital until 1924, housed the Leona Vicario School in 1947 and functioned as a House of Culture from 1987 to July 23, 2002. CESTEQ facilities.

This route also includes the House of Lieutenant Colonel Norberto García de la Vega who was born in Colón in 1906, son of Mr. José García and Mrs. María Dolores de la Vega. Assassinated on the morning of August 8, 1937.

Casa Landaverde. In 1923, in the Declaration of Colón as a Free and Sovereign Municipality, the official photo of the first Interim City Council was taken in this place, the first President being C. J. Refugio González, Councilors: Clemente Ugalde, Mariano Uribe, José García and Francisco Moreno.

The Puente de la Purísima, old Camino Real. On the wall on the south side there is a column, which consists of a pedestal and at the end a niche that houses a sculpture of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The property belonged to Don Amado de la Mota, the business was called "La Gaviota" in the nineteenth century. This house was inhabited by Don Marciano de León Granados, musician, poet, author of the "Corrido a Colón", "La Dolorosa" and founder of the Mariachi "Colón", compiler of the "Testimonies of the Cristero Movement in Colón".

Finally, the route is consolidated in the Basilica of Soriano. The Temple was closed to worship due to the conflict between General Calles and the Catholic Church, which culminated in the Cristero Movement, in defense of religious freedom. In the case of Columbus, the armed uprising occurred on February 4, 1928, in this year the Sacristan of Soriano was shot on the south side of the transept of the Temple. When the weapons were handed over in 1929, the objects of the Temple were returned, including the image of the Virgin of Sorrows.

Colón, as a bastion of religious freedom, is therefore a special destination for visitors. Along the way you will be able to enjoy multiple gastronomic delicacies and enjoy the municipality from another perspective: pure history.
