Strengthening tradition.

As every year, the Ministry of Tourism of the State of Querétaro invites you to celebrate the Day of the Dead in Querétaro as part of one of the most deeply rooted customs and traditions in Mexican culture.

From October 27 to November 5, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the traditional Monumental Altar that will be installed in the iconic Plaza de Armas, this 2023, dedicated to an icon of theater culture in the city of Querétaro: Francisco Miguel Rabell Fernández.

The tribute.

Paco Rabell, born in the municipality of Cadereyta de Montes, today the Magical Town of Querétaro, arrived in the state capital with his family at the age of 7. An outstanding student of the Autonomous University of Querétaro, his passion for theatrical art, Paco Rabell founded, together with the Querétaro poet Hugo Gutiérrez Vega, the company Cómicos de la Legua, belonging to the same most important house of studies in the state, inspired by Federico García Lorca and Juan de Timoneda in Spain.

Thanks to the actor, founder, artistic and administrative director of this university theater company, which presented its first performance in the atrium of Santa Rosa de Viterbo 64 years ago, Cómicos de la Legua toured the eighteen municipalities of the state and other entities of the Mexican Republic.

Without a doubt, a well-deserved tribute to one of the pioneers of university theater in our state.

QUERÉTARO DAY OF THE DEAD FESTIVAL 2023

The Festival.

In homage to the actor and theater director, this year the Monumental Altar that will be installed in Plaza de Armas will have a concept based on theater, with which, the State Secretariat of Tourism will place six photographic spots on the walkways near the Monumental Altar, mainly in the Carranza and Libertad walkways, with the concept of puppet theater, and in the 5 de Mayo walkway with theatrical curtains so that passers-by in this area of the Historic Center can take fun and memorable photos to share on their social networks.

In addition, as the main amenity that accompanies the altar dedicated to this man of theater, the Corral de Comedias company, of which Paco Rabell was the promoter and playwright during his last years, will perform theatrical performances from October 28 to November 2, with three different performances each day, at 6:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Day of the Dead in the Historic Center.

In addition to these activities, any local, national or foreign tourist will also be able to find catrinas and decoration on the occasion of Mictlán, or the underworld in folklore and pre-Hispanic traditions, in charge of the municipality of Querétaro, as well as various altars, both in the neighborhoods of the city, in the Plaza Constitución (in charge of the Patronato de las Fiestas de Querétaro) and the Ministry of Culture. in the different museums in the center. However, something that will attract a lot of attention will be the parade of Catrinas and Catrines that will run along Corregidora Street, for the fun of those passionate about these dates and the traditions of our country that fill us with pride and cheer our spirit.

Although the Day of the Dead is a celebration that by tradition each home celebrates in its own way, some municipalities celebrate this important Mexican tradition in a big way. Tequisquiapan, Magical Town, once again holds its bread of the dead festival, to try different versions of this typical bun of these dates, in addition to the contests of literary skulls, costumes and altars of the dead, as well as artistic, cultural and musical presentations in the iconic Miguel Hidalgo square, from November 1 to 5.

Amealco also prepares workshops, contests, legend tours, parade of catrinas and catrines, guided tours of the monumental offering, as well as musical and cultural presentations for the public.

For its part, San Juan del Río invites you to experience its traditional mourning contest, as part of its Day of the Dead activities program, to keep alive this custom that has its origins in the wakes that hired mourners to mourn the deceased. Unlike the other parades, San Juan organizes the 'March of the Dead' to entertain with hundreds of people dressed as zombies and other characters from popular culture.

If you take the opportunity to leave the city, Pinal de Amoles offers a mystical spectacle with the 'Camino de Luz', traced with candles and marigold petals between the streets and houses adorned with papel picado and offerings dedicated to honor the memory of the relatives of the inhabitants of this Magical Town.
