It was the first religious temple built in Querétaro, beginning its construction between 1550 and 1598. In addition to the temple, the convent had an orchard, a large atrium that served as a cemetery, and other chapels which were demolished during the Reformation. The temple served as Querétaro's cathedral between 1856 and 1922.
Throughout the years it has received multiple restorations, and in 1934 a part of the convent was destined to be a museum, currently known as "Museo Regional de Querétaro" (Regional Museum of Querétaro).
