Tequisquiapan was founded on July 24 in 1551 and its name, of Nahuatl origin, means "place on the tequesquite river", due to the trees that grow next to the Tequisquiapan river, which a little further north is known as Moctezuma and feeds the Zimapán dam. In 2012 Tequisquiapan was declared a magical town.
