This temple was built by Don Diego de Tapia, who was the son of the founder of Queretaro, Don Fernando de Tapia, widely known by his indigenous name Conin.
It was one of the largest and most important convents in New Spain, although it lost most of its facilities during the Reform War.
The temple as we know it today was completed in 1668 and became the seat of the Sacred Heart Parish in 1921.
