Located 3 kilometers from the municipal capital, in the area located on top of two hills, it is another of San Joaquin's attractions. This site was a relevant ceremonial, political and religious center of the ancient Chichimecs. The Archaeological Zone of Ranas was a city that flourished during the Classic period and was an autonomous cultural development of the Sierra Gorda. They were dedicated to the exploitation and trade of cinnabar, the reddish mineral used in funerary rites throughout Mesoamerica.
