Tequisquiapan was founded on July 24, 1551 and its name, of Nahuatl origin, means "place on the tequesquite river", after the trees that grow along the Tequisquiapan river, which a little further north is known as Moctezuma and feeds the Zimapán dam. In 2012 Tequisquiapan was declared a magical town.
