The staging of La Cañada celebrated 60 years of being performed
It is one of the oldest and most traditional in Querétaro. The Stations of the Cross of La Cañada is recognized at the state level for the preparation and passion with which the last hours of Jesus of Nazareth are relived year after year.
The preparation to perform it at Easter begins on January 8, the actors usually have established roles, but in the same way there is an opportunity for new residents of the neighborhood to try their luck.
La Cañada becomes Jerusalem
During the early hours of Good Friday, the community of La Cañada becomes the ancient city of Jerusalem. The scenes of that day when Jesus was judged are transferred to the streets of the Querétaro neighborhood to be relived by the thousands of visitors.
Before the pandemic, up to 8 thousand people attended to enjoy the biblical staging. Throughout the main avenue, Emiliano Zapata Street, there are stalls selling food, water, and different items, and hundreds of people wait for the Stations of the Cross to advance to the hill of the Bautisterio.
The road to 'Golgotha'
The hill of Calvary, or also known as Golgotha, was the place where Jesus of Nazareth died on the cross, now the Stations of the Cross from all over the world transfer those scenes to their communities. The hill of the Bautisterio, in El Marqués, becomes that place for a few hours.
From Emiliano Zapata Street, thousands of people ascend to occupy one of the places and thus witness the crucification and death of Jesus. Hundreds of umbrellas fill the scene, children, women, men, the elderly are witnesses of the representation; the character of Jesus climbs after falling three times on the main avenue, carries a heavy cross of 80 kilos and is beaten by the modern-day Romans.
The Way of the Cross comes to an end with the remembered words of the son of Mary: 'Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit', the thousands of people who reached a place to witness that moment look at it carefully, the last part is prepared, which is the descent from the cross.
The sun goes down and burns the skin of the actors who recurrently cool off with water, it is time to finish and people begin to leave the venue.
