On more than one occasion all the people who inhabit the planet have turned to look at the sky, perhaps and even more so on the starry nights offered by the fields and forests; however, being able to appreciate the universe in a professional way is a fascinating experience about learning and the magnitude of those around us, do you know the options of astronomical observatories that you have in Querétaro?
Dr. José Hernández Moreno Planetarium
It was rejected eleven times by NASA; however, in 2009 he finally fulfilled his dream of traveling to space on the Discovery mission, that is Dr. José Hernández Moreno, the first astronaut of Mexican origin to visit space and who gives his name to the planetarium located north of the municipal seat of Cadereyta de Montes.
The place is a center for the dissemination of astronomical science and culture, in its projection room you will appreciate films and documentaries related to outer space, its mysteries and discoveries, the same place where the night sky is recreated from various places on Earth and at different times of the year.
In addition to the projection room, visitors will have a guided tour dictated by teaching professionals and passionate about space science, the gallery shows a photographic exhibition of various celestial bodies in a thematic frame that explains constellations and the plane in which we are located, in addition to receiving an induction on the spatial map and a review of the life and professional work of Dr. José Hernández.
The magic of the site is still missing: The observatory has two telescopes, a solar telescope in which all the phenomena that occur on the sun are appreciated; and another astronomical telescope, where the night sky and celestial bodies are the protagonists of the observatory.
Giordano Bruno Space Observatory
Arriving at sunset on a weekend in the town of Bernal – in addition to the imposing view offered by the rock with the dim sunlight – can be an excellent opportunity to stay at the Hotel Medieval, home to the spectacular Giordano Bruno space observatory.
With more than 1000 visits since its inauguration in July of this year and recognized by NASA, the observatory is equipped with a long-range telescope, Meade 16" Lx200 model, brought from San Diego by the same author of 'Bernal Mágico', Edgardo Cabrera.
In the Giordano Bruno (named in homage to the Italian astronomer who died in 1600 for defending science and its cosmological theories) planets, nebulae, stars and even other galaxies can be appreciated. Guided tours of the observatory are open only on weekends and include an astronomy class prior to entering the splendid dome.
