A place of memory and customs
Tolimán is part of the semi-desert of Querétaro, just over an hour away from the capital of Querétaro; It is one of the places in the state that most preserves its traditions alive despite the time.
It is a municipality that is characterized by its particular religious syncretism between Catholicism and its Otomi origins, reflected in its festivals, its customs, the work they do there and the veneration of their ancestors, all in the midst of imposing desert landscapes that you can enjoy on a weekend road trip.
In Tolimán you will find countless riches between the representative gastronomy, the festivities and the pilgrimage routes, characteristics that in 2009 gave it the designation of Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco as "Place of memory and living traditions of the Otomí-Chichimeca peoples".
The cultural base of Tolimán is the Otomí, which proudly displays its roots through the Hñähñu language, its inherited traditions, its typical costumes, its handicrafts and products.
The devotion to the ancestral practices that they have from the adults to the new generations, such as family chapels, the protection of the festivities and indigenous dances, make the municipality an incalculable treasure.
In September, you can't miss the Fiestas de San Miguel Arcángel, in which you will find dances and rituals such as the lifting of the Chimal, an imposing structure that stands in honor of the patron saint and envelops you in an atmosphere of majesty.
The decoration of the chimal is made with flowers, leaves, fruits, candies, pieces of bread, colorful tortillas. Before the uprising, the parish priest blesses the offering with holy water and incense and then sprinkles it with brandy. These rituals are believed to be what allow it to stand; It is undoubtedly a spiritual experience that will connect you with your roots.
Unmissable landscapes
Tolimán is a semi-desert region that marks the entrance to the Sierra Gorda de Querétaro, so in addition to its culture, it has many natural attractions that make the municipality a fantastic destination.
Spend an afternoon of adventure surrounded by nature in Piedra Honda, San Miguel, where you can cool off by swimming under the shade of junipers, or with a dip in the river of Las Adjuntas de Bomintzá.
But if hiking is your thing, visit Maguey Manso and let yourself be amazed by its landscapes, or get to know San Antonio de la Cal, the community most recognized for its gastronomy, and arrive at the Hidden Face of the Peña de Bernal.
Traditional cuisine
Tolimán safeguards history through the flavors of Otomi cuisine. It has traditional cooks, experienced and recognized in culinary techniques, who take advantage of the endemic ingredients of Querétaro and safeguard the traditions that are generated from food.
You can't leave without trying the classic yellow chickpeas, Tolimán-style mole, colorful tortillas or all the diversity of dishes based on nopales, quelites, purslane and flowers.
