Witness to various eras

This municipality is named in memory of Don Juan Antonio de Urrutia y Arana, Marquis of Villa del Villar del Águila, benefactor of Querétaro who financed the construction of the Aqueduct that transported water from La Cañada to Santiago de Querétaro.

It is part of the Creative Metropolis because it borders the capital of Querétaro, and the municipal seat is La Cañada, which houses important historical monuments such as the statue of Conín, the Otomí cacique founder of Querétaro.

Land of wines and haciendas

El Marqués has been consolidating itself as a benchmark for good wines and country gastronomy, coupled with the fact that many of the vineyards were developed in what were previously colonial haciendas.

This is where the Route begins

Wines and gastronomy, the El Marqués experience

With a fresh and innovative food and wine offer, the vineyards of Puerta del Lobo, Vinos del Marqués, Viñedos del Polo, María & Bernardo and Finca Ancestra have paved the way to become a rich and open-air option, being also spaces aimed at becoming large tourist complexes, for events, residential and sports.

Here you will also find Rancho Santa Marina, a vineyard and cheese factory that promotes rural tourism and responsible consumption or El Terregal, an equestrian sanctuary that invites you to experience the best of the countryside.

Historic Sites

El Marqués has 24 former haciendas from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which you can admire and visit to spend an exceptional weekend. Among them are Hacienda Atongo, Ex Hacienda El Lobo, Misión de Chichimequillas, Hacienda Amazcala and La Casa del Molino.

You will also find the Biomuseo de El Marqués, which brings together flora and fauna characteristic of the municipality.

Creative Hands

Saddlery and stonemasonry, two generational trades that fill the municipality with pride

In the community of San Vicente Ferrer, saddlery is developed, which is the art of working with leather. There they create both everyday items, such as purses, jackets, bags, belts, as well as specialized leather products such as horseback riding saddles.

In La Cañada, there are several workshops dedicated to working the quarry. His main works are dedicated to representing religious images, or to creating decorations for the home, such as fountains, facades, columns.

As for traditional handicrafts, their wool textiles such as sarapes, blankets and rugs made on homemade looms also stand out; as well as millstones for nixtamal, molcajetes and metals.

A little bit of everything:

Another point of interest within the municipality is the Chiquita Church in La Cañada, the first Catholic temple built in the state. Its ancient architecture is mostly made of pink quarry from the region, and tells endless stories that identify the community. Inside there is a pink quarry basin in which it is believed that the indigenous Conín, founder of Querétaro, was baptized, and according to legend, this pile moves year after year.

The Ecocentro Expositor, where various exhibitions are held throughout the year, including the Querétaro International Fair every December, probably the most popular event in the state.

You will also find the El Carmen dam, where you can take the opportunity to practice ecotourism activities such as fishing.

Patron Saint Festivities

La Cañada is known for its traditional neighborhoods and the colorful festivities that identify them. One of them is the Rooster Festival from December 8 of each year, where roosters are made of Chinese paper, cardboard, reeds and other materials, for a good start to the Christmas season.

This joyful festivity begins with the blessing of the parish priest and then goes through the neighborhoods of La Cañada and is a true carnival of fun with food, dance, music, decorations and costumes.

A conservation space

Another attraction that cannot be missed is the Wamerú Zoo.

With more than 1800 species, some of them endangered, this enclosure opened to the public in 1995 with the aim of preserving fauna and raising awareness about the protection of species.
