Its construction by Fray Pedro de San Antonio dates back to 1613 and was completed in 1677.
This place had beautiful carved wooden altarpieces with luxurious ornaments and jewels, which were destroyed in 1861 by the liberals during the Reform; in 1867 it was used as a military barracks. With time the altarpieces were changed for ones of neoclassical style, and they are the ones that can be appreciated until today.
