Discover one of the largest monoliths of the world
La Peña de Bernal is a gigantic monolith formed from 8.7 million years ago, like a viscous lava dome between much older rocks of marine origin, with ages of 100-150 million years.
La Peña de Bernal is the natural monument of the State of Querétaro and was declared a protected nature reserve in 2007. Two years later, in 2009, it was certified by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, due to the symbolic importance of traditions and living memories of the Otomí-Chichimeca culture; In addition, in 2019 it was registered in the UNESCO Global Network of Geoparks as part of the Sacred Triangle project. This "Sacred Triangle", closely linked to the Otomí-Chichimeca worldview, has its vertices in the Peña de Bernal to the south, Cerro El Zamorano to the west and Cerro El Frontón to the east.
When you are in the Magical Town of Bernal, we recommend taking a picture of the Peña from the Arturo Guerrero pedestrian walker, you will notice that it makes an incredible optical effect, which makes it seem that the Peña is located at the end of the street.
