Since its designation as a Ramsar site, the dam has been recognized as a refuge for a vast number of migratory birds, as well as endemic species. In 2016, a study was started to learn about the biodiversity of birds, directed by the staff of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve of the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) in conjunction with voluntary groups, as is the case of the eco chavos of the town of Jalpan.
