Queretaro is located inside the viceregal cities routes, a tour that, leaving from the capital of the State, passes through San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Morelia and discovers this novohispanic jewels through where Camino Real de Tierra Adentro or Ruta de la Plata used to pass. If Queretaro is a small state, its interior attractions are multiplied the double with the number of options. Next, we present you a basic itinerary.
If you don´t have many time, you can know a little about the History and the culture of Queretaro in just one day. Arrive early to the Historic Downtown and have some “enchiladas queretanas” at La Mariposa, or if you prefer, go through the alleys in search of the so famous broken-corn “gorditas”. Go to the Regional Museum and take the Touristic Tram that will take you through the streets and history of the city; from the pre-Hispanic age visiting the “Cerrito Pyramid”, to the civil wars of the XIX century in the “Cerro de las Campanas”. In the evening, have lunch in one of the restaurants with balcony and enjoy the nice weather: the gastronomic options will be adapted to your taste. To finish, have a coffee in the “portales” that have a view to the Plaza de Armas, and stay there letting the time go by, thinking that maybe you should stay another day.
You may be aware that Queretaro could be small on the map, but it is immense in the geography of the trips. When will you feel like staying in the State for one more day?, maybe under the immense sky full of stars of Bernal, or when you relax in Tequisquiapan in the large puddles of a hotel after two days of traveling. After having traveled through the Historic Downtown and having made the Wine Route, you will be ready to travel to the end of the world. At dawn you should go to the Biosphere Reserve of the Sierra Gorda, so you can contemplate the five baroque treasures that have exuberant vegetation. The missions of Jalpan, Concá, Tilaco, Landa and Tanacoyol were built up by the group efforts of the natives of the region and the Franciscan monks, and they represent the latest period of the evangelization of the New Spain and they symbolize the foundation of an utopist society in a virgin land. La Sierra is a different territory: its landscapes, its gastronomy and people will make you realize how much of Queretaro you´re still missing.
We are certain you are going to stay one more day with us so, we recommend you to dedicate it to know the capital surroundings by doing the Wine Route. After one day at the Historic Downtown, stay in some of the elegant hotel-houses and next day leave to the semi-desert. The three most important vineyards are found in less than half an hour: Cavas Freixenet, La Redonda vineyards, and Rancho Los Azteca; try the fruits of the old wine tradition of Queretaro and be a witness of the wine elaboration, from the grape´s birth to the bottle uncorking. VAI cheeses and La Hondonada Ranch, located in the same circuit, are cheese shops characterized for their artisan effort of their products. To finish, you shouldn´t miss the visit of the painteresque town of Tequisquiapan and the Magic Town of Bernal that has the third biggest monolith of the world.
You have already walked through the steets of Santiago de Queretaro, enjoyed the gastronomy in the Wine Route and discovered the Franciscan missions and the Sierra Gorda. Now, take the opportunity to rest in a luxury safari-type cabin and enjoy yourself intensively in some of the ecotouristic camps. Next to a dam, in the Sierra Gorda or in the middle of a canyon you will be able to go fishing, bicycle and motorcycle riding, being in contact with nature or doing some extreme sport like rappel, tyrolese or gotcha.
